This was a short but informative unit on teaching receptive skills. The four basic skills in any language (which is a fact I didn't know) are reading & listening (the receptive skills) and speaking and writing (the productive skills). There are two main reasons for reading and listening: for a purpose or for entertainment and sometimes the two reasons may blur. I find this information fascinating because a former middle school teacher in the United States I have tried to get my students no matter what subject I teach to learn to enjoy reading and do read more nonfiction material. Some of this information I learned today could have been applied to my middle school students and will definitely be used with my TEFL students of all ages. I learned a lot about how we read and listen and helpful ways to help those areas. I'm excited to start this new career but with a familiar pattern.
