Unit 12 talks about teaching the productive skills: speaking and writing. Speaking and writing are used for sending a message. Writing is the most neglected skill and students often do it as a homework. First, I have learnt the difference between accuracy and fluency activities. Accuracy and fluency carry equal importance. Accuracy activities are in the study phase while fluency activities are in the activate phase. Second, I have learnt the three main types of speaking activities: the controlled, the guided and the free or creative activities. The unit also mentioned what makes speaking hard for students and how to overcome this and encourage students? interaction. Finally, I have learnt the main aspects of the writing skill: handwriting, spelling, punctuation and creative writing. Unit 12 also provided me with useful guidelines for a creative speaking and writing activity.
