The four skills in learning all kinds of languages are: receptive skills like reading and listening; productive skills like speaking and writing.These four skills are equally important to language learners.There are many ways we can read and listen, first one is predictive skill, which is to predict the content from headline or introduction; second, scanning read and listen, we find out the specific information;third, skimming, we look for general understanding instead of focusing on individual word; fourth,detailed information, we read in concentrated manner for full benefit. Learning and teaching receptive skills can be problematic, to minimise problems, teachers need to pre-teach the vocabulary, carefully select the texts and create interests.Patch work is an example introduced to teach receptive skills in this unit, the outline is engage-study-engage-study-active-study-active.
