In addition to receptive skills, productive skills(speaking and writing) are needed for successful language learning. While being able to speak is crucial for communication, writing also has its place. When students think of a word, they picture it, and probably imitate the word's sound in their head; this allows for internalization of a word, so when they speak, it will come faster. Also, it helped to see the distinction in types of speaking practice(accuracy and fluency). Accuracy practice aids in producing specific natural responses quickly, because of the drill-style of learning; and Fluency capitalizes on this, in addition to other learned material, because the focus is on improvising. Good exercises in these topics(and other areas) are games. Games are good tools, because of their flexibility in purpose, and they can make students excited, which can help facilitate learning.
