Teaching pronunciation and phonology in the English class is important and often considered difficult by students but can be neglected by teachers in the classroom. Whether teachers use whole lessons, lesson slots, or on an as needed basis, stress, intonation, phonology and sound articulation are a vital component of English language teaching. For intonation, students should understand the 3 patterns rise/fall, fall/rise, and flat, as well as when each are used and what they signal. For word stress, students should understand the basic rules of using syllable stress (and conversely lack of stress) to indicate principal emphasis in a word or phrase. Sound joining should be emphasized as it leads to a more natural native-like speech pattern for students. Finally, the sounds of English can be taught directly, including use of the phonemic alphabet and place and manner of articulation.
