In this lesson, I learned about teaching pronunciation and phonology. I learned the difference between intonation and stress. Intonation is the variation in volume and pitch within an entire sentence and carries the meaning of the sentence. Stress, however, emphasizes what is important or being focused on in a sentence. In English, we can only stress syllables. I also learned about sound joining, which includes, linking, sound dropping, sound changing, and extra lettering. I also learned about the phonetic alphabet and phonemic symbols. Phonemic symbols are universal for all English speakers across the globe. When it comes to articulation, there are different parts to the physical mouth structure that dictate how we make certain sounds. Using visual mouth charts and physically showing students how your mouth moves when saying certain words is very helpful for English learning students.
