Unit 12 deals with the \"Productive Skills\" -- Speaking and Writing. It also includes a link to several games that can be adapted to fit into the communication needs of a lesson. I learned that Writing generally requires Accuracy, while Speaking focuses on Fluency. Two of the Speaking activities discussed, however, also stress accuracy: Controlled Activities and Guided Activities, which should be used in the Study Phase. The Activate phase of creative speaking should be based on fluency activities such as discussions, Information Gap tasks, and communication games, whereas the Activate phase of creating writing should focus on writing tasks in pairs. I found three sections of this Unit particularly helpful: The typical ESA Speaking Lesson on pg. 6, the ESA Writing Lesson on pg. 8, and especially the Guidelines for Speaking Activity that are ¥presented on pages 4 and 5.
