What struck me as particularly useful about this Unit was the sense it gave me for how different types of course materials fit into a lesson plan. Answering questions 8-12 cemented this for me by forcing me to think about how a gap-fill exercise relates to a role-play (it allows students an opportunity to measure their own understanding and build personal confidence with the content). As a budding teacher, I get the sense that feeling comfortable with the ESA structure of a lesson is one way to gain subtle control of the coursework and the student's learning. For example, the more I understand what each given section of my lesson is meant to accomplish (in terms of learning goals), the better I can adapt to a student's needs. Adjusting coursework, along with other elements such as pacing, clarity and individualized attention, is clearly one of the best ways to tailor a class to students needs.
