Whereas receptive skills involve students' reading and listening, productive skills focused on in unit twelve include writing and speaking. Each productive skill requires a different mode of attention from the teacher. For example, while teaching students how to write, they must focus on accuracy of the language, such as spelling, format, and the ability to differentiate between homonyms. Speaking should have less focus on accuracy, and more focus on fluency, encouraging a natural flow of ideas and experimental use of language. Though accuracy in pronunciation is important, preparing students with speaking tools and interesting ideas and topics ahead of time should be the focus regarding speaking activities. Because each branch of productive skills have different focuses, typically writing activities would be present in the study phase and speaking activities in the engage phase of ESA lesson plans.
