I've learnt how to teach receptive skills - reading and listening - in this chapter. For receptive, students read for purpose or entertainment. And when students read or listen, they requires predictive skills, reading detailed information, scanning, skimming and deduction. To help students to build confidence, we can pre-teach the vocabulary, but it's better to not to teach all words from the context to let them build deduction skills. Also, we need to be careful when we select the texts as authentic texts are designed for language students while non-authentic texts are for building the confidence. Here are some teaching points: Topics - Try to choose variety of topics the students are likely interested in. Create interest - Try to motivate by using engage stages. Tasks - build to check the understanding, but don't make it too easy or too difficult. Jumbled texts or jigsaw read are good example.
