Unit 13 is the introduction of pronunciation and phonology. Most teachers often neglect this area of teaching because of lack of confidence. Students too, find it to be complicated, however, they think it is important to learn. Some important techniques that a teacher can use to help students with intonation and stress are the use of gestures, singing and writing on the board. It is imperative that student don't confuse syllables with individual vowels and consonants, since only syllables are stressed. In order to get a better feel for pronunciation, students can refer to the International Phonemic Alphabet (IPA) which uses symbols to refer to the sound of a vowel or consonant regardless of the language used. Teachers must remember to be patient when teaching pronunciation and realize that some students may never become proficient with pronunciation, but may just do well enough to be understood.
