In this unit I viewed a video depicting an effective teacher and lesson and a video showing an example of an effective teacher following an organized lesson plan. I was able to easily identify areas of opportunity for the teacher in the first lesson; i.e. the teacher acted in a condescending, disinterested, abrupt manner, didn't praise or encourage the students, and was generally impersonal and surly. The instruction in the second video was more organized and delivered with humor and good nature. A few things the teacher could have done to help understanding would have been to write a simple agenda on the board so the students had an idea of what they were going to cover during the lesson, use more visual aids for such a descriptive vocabulary category as animals, and include a more active second Activate phase activity; having the students get up from their desks and move could have been effective.
