Modal verbs are used to add meaning to other verbs. These meanings include obligation, possibility, ability and asking permission. They also express different degrees of formality, surety and strength of advice. The passive voice is used to change the focus of the sentence to the object of a verb, making it the subject of the passive verb. The importance shifts from who performed the action to whom the action was performed on. The passive voice is, in my opinion, relatively easy to understand for intermediate students. It just needs practice. This is because the passive voice is just a shift in the subject. The speaker just has to change the subject of the sentence. Phrasal verbs are verbs that come with prepositions and/or adverbs attached, and that have a particular meaning together. This connection functions as one item with one meaning. It is a good suggestion to teach phrasal verbs as vocabulary items.
