I've learnt the advantages and the disadvantages of both authentic and non-authentic materials. Authentic materials such as newspapers, magazines, TV programs etc. will be attractive to the students and they will give them the chances to see and read English used in real situations. Non-authentic materials such as course books are so useful and helpful especially inexperienced teachers with the teachers guide, good activities etc. and will give them creative ideas. They are also graded for all levels and continuous process. But at the same time, teachers can get lazy and won't analyze much about by themselves as a result. We have to understand course books is always a compromise for they are produced and aimed for all nationalities, for example. We should examine them well before they use them. Omitting, replacing, supplementing, adapting would be good technics for making the most of the course book use.
