A teacher will encounter common classroom problems throughout their career. This unit provides a few examples of classroom problems and suggests various ways of dealing with them. If a teacher is dealing with a class of new students, it is a good idea to establish a rapport with them and find out what they hope to gain by learning English. This can be done by needs analysis, questionnaire, games, or discussion. If a class is made up of students of varying levels, it might be a good idea to pair stronger students with weaker ones or have extra activities prepared for students who finish tasks more quickly than their classmates. If some students are reluctant to participate in class activities, it might be a good idea to make them more comfortable by using controlled practice, pair work, or role play. With experience, teachers will adopt a mix of activities that will enable their classes to progress smoothly.
