It is nice to finally understand what all those syllables meant - in all my education no one has ever explained the phonemic symbols to me, so it has always been something I've noticed in dictionaries but never fully understood. I would imagine that teaching the symbols and how to read phonemic script is both important and useful to new learners of English, but I would also argue that teachers need to be very careful as to when and how to introduce to the class. I know from experience that when learning a new language it is complicated enough to read and understand pronunciation of words, and while understanding the different sounds in the language is fundamental, a chart like this could be more confusing, especially in the beginning. Teachers who refer to this have to remain constant in using it so as to familiarize and normalise the students in understanding its objective without further confusing them.
