Unit 13 challenged my views about teaching phonetics. As a grade 1 teacher, the teaching of phonics is an integral part of my everyday teaching, especially as teachers in my practice see this as being paramount in helping children read and write. Therefore as I initially watched the first video, I had my doubts about teaching the international phonetic alphabet in addition to reading and writing, as I believed it would surely confuse the students. (I am still unsure whether this would be suitable for younger children.) However, as I then began to watch this being put into practice (in the second video), I could see how this is important in helping non-native speakers. Cultures such as Thai and Greek do use scripts similar to this system and I myself had never really been attentive to the fact that the international alphabet is used in our dictionaries before. I checked this during this study and was fascinated.
