There are formal systems for categorizing the skill levels of language learners. While the names vary between European countries and the US, the five basic categories are consistent. Students come to a language class with varying motivations, existing skills and expectations. A teacher may assume different roles within the classroom: deliverer of course content, model of course skill, someone to draw out student responses and provide correction, creator of activities for students to work on independently, etc. An instructor may occupy a combination of these roles in a single class session. Whatever the circumstances, however, it is essential for a teacher not to dominate classroom interaction; her students should be speaking half of the time. This engaged practice gives students an opportunity to develop their skills by \"doing the thing,\" not just thinking about it, or listening to someone else speak about it.
