There are five main conditionals in the English language. Zero - refers to actions and facts that are not changeable eg ice cream melts if it is hot. First conditional - real situations in the future that are possible or even certain eg will, can,should,must. Second conditional - meaning a present or in the future a situation that at the present time not true, nor likely to be. Third conditional - an action that could have happened but didnt eg I could have won that race if I had run faster,but I didn't. Mixed conditional - meaning a past action or state and the present consequence eg If I had gone, I would have been in that accident too. I have learnt that students can get mixed up very easily with the different meanings of the conditionals. It is important to provide them with plenty of practice. This is achieved with exercises and drills and roleplays during class. This helps the student to learn and instills confidence.
