Unit 16 proved to me that conditionals and reported speech are formulaic. Sentences containing an ?if? clause consist of five main conditionals: zero conditional, first conditional, second conditional, third conditional, and mixed conditional. Each has its own form and usage. For example, the third conditional form is: if +past perfect, would/could/might +have+ past participle. This form refers to a hypothetical past action and the hypothetical consequence or result. Both the action and the consequence were hypothetical, resulting in the impossibility of both. With regard to reported speech, I learned that every direct speech has a corresponding reported speech in which the verb tense is often changed. One such example is present simple direct speech. The present simple changes to past simple in reported speech. These types of patterns and formulas are ubiquitous when dealing with the conditional form and reported speech.
