This unit has taught me new ideas in managing a class. Though I have taught in a standard classroom setting for six years, there are still several useful tips that I know can be applied to my current online classes. Since I use video lessons for teaching English to Japanese students, eye contact, gesture, and my tone of voice are very important to signal the student, let them know that they are involved in the lesson, and give them prompts when their answer is correct or not. The most significant learning for me was about the Teacher Talking Time (TTT) and the Student Talking Time (STT.) This was a great reminder for me to avoid using TEFL jargon when teaching my foreign students. It is also comforting to know that I have been doing the correct thing by using a vocabulary set that is lower than the level of the student being taught. It is good not to over elaborate so as not to take so much TTT and allocate the time for more STT.
