This unit is particularly interesting to me because from my experiences learning foreign languages through high school and undergraduate years, receptive skills were always the hardest for me, particularly the listening skills. I think I?m very much more of a visual learner and thus, listening to a foreign language and having to pick up from context and not take every word literally was always a huge challenge. I think having had that kind of challenging background in receptive skills makes me particularly aware of the types of problems and emotions a student might feel in the face of not being able to understand a foreign language wholly from just listening. As much as possible, I would like to emphasize the role of empathy as the teacher helps his or her students practice as much as they can with these skills without cutting down on their confidence and without discouraging them too much if it doesn?t come too naturally.
