This unit covered the two productive language skills of speaking and writing. The differences between the two skills were covered as were the differences between accuracy activities and fluency activities and the value of each in teaching a language. I felt an important highlight of the unit was the section in which it was noted that English is not a phonetic language. Many words are written the same way, but pronounced differently and others are said the same way, but written differently. It is important to be aware of this as students will be challenged by the spelling of many words that don't match the pronunciation. Another interesting note in the unit is that many languages do not have punctuation, making it important for the teacher to research the native languages of their students in order to anticipate and develop lessons specifically geared toward teaching an element of language with which the students may have no experience.
