This unit covered the various theories, methods and techniques used in language teaching. Grammar translation, audio lingualism and task-based learning were some of the earlier methods used. Community language learning, suggestopaedia and presentation,practice and production were the teaching methods that shaped the current TEFL practice. Students need to be motivated, to be exposed to the language and have the opportunity to use it. To ensure that all these factors are applied in the classroom, a method called ESA (Engage, Study, Activate), was developed. We learnt about the importance of elicitation, as part of the ESA process and some very helpful techniques to use. We got several examples of how to use the three ESA elements in lessons and the different sequences that can be used in Straight Arrow ,Boomerang and Patchwork Lessons. Ideas were given for the use of each phase, as well as feedback and correction techniques and lesson planning.
