This unit briefly covers three major components of teaching a new language: vocabulary, grammar, and language structure. When teaching vocabulary it is important to keep in mind that students often know more vocabulary than they can use. When choosing the vocabulary you want to teach, there is more flexibility that when teaching grammar. There is no set order that vocabulary needs to be learnt. Some things to consider when choosing vocabulary are the appropriacy to students or the task at hand, the frequency and coverage of words and the teachability of vocabulary. When teaching grammar there is typically a set order that it should be taught to students.When learning grammar students must understand the meaning, use, forms and patterns, and the differences between spoken and written forms of grammar structures. Finally, teachers will be expected to teach language functions such as inviting and refusing, agreeing and disagreeing, and suggesting.
