This unit has allowed me to begin to reflect on the type of teacher I want to be for my foreign language students. A teacher wears multiple hats and has multiple roles throughout the day and these are changing throughout the day and semester as the learning goals switch. Some qualities of a 'good teacher' are to be respectful, in order to gain respect from students; to build a good rapport with students; enthusiasm to create engaging activities; patience; and a teacher that is aware of student circumstances. These are the qualities I will strive to hold as a teacher of foreign language learners. This unit also taught me that there are several factors that could contribute to student learning such as self-motivation; their previous learning and life experiences, their background knowledge of the English language, and their ability to ask questions. These are all important factors to keep in mind when planning and assessing student understanding.
