Pronunciation is an important part of English language learning. Phonology is the study of the physical properties of sounds. Intonation has to do with variations in volume and pitch. You can teach intonation with techniques such as nonsense words, gestures, humming or singing, showing intonation by drawing a line showing emphasis on the board. Where you put stress in a word can change its meaning, and is something important in communication. Non-native English speakers must understand the importance of which word you emphasise in a sentence, and which syllables you emphasise in words. The phonetic alphabet and phonetic symbols can help overcome confusion from the different, idiosyncratic sounds different parts of speech in the English language make. Articulation has to do with the physical movements made by the mouth and vocal chords, and must be perfected, or at least reach a usable level, for the non-native speaker to communicate effectively.
