Course books are useful tool for teaching a language, but overuse can be detrimental because it can reduce teacher creativity and can become boring for the students. Furthermore course books are created with a general audience in mind, and are therefore not tailored for a specific student's needs and situation. It is a good idea to supplement, adapt or sometimes replace course book material with custom made materials to get better results. At the same time, omitting or replacing too much of the course book might cause the student to question why they purchased the book and this should be avoided when possible. When preparing or selecting custom materials it is important to make sure they are suitable for the students, both in terms of difficulty and cultural content. When selecting a course it is important to consider a number of elements: the price, availability, design, methodology, skills taught, difficulty, topic and extra material provided.
