Reading and Listening are the two \"receptive skills\" in learning English. All 4 skills are important, many lessons focus on one skills, but must bring in the other skills for integrated lessons that create a balanced approach for learning. The two motivators for reading and listening are for a purpose and for entertainment, students must use and activate their pre existing knowledge to comprehend and process when reading and listening. The skills used for comprehension include: prediction, scanning for specific info, skimming for the main idea, understanding detail, and using context to deduce meaning. Students can encounter some problems with language when reading and listening, which can be anticipated by pre teaching vocabulary, careful test selection, varying k topics that are of interest to the students, creating interest for the students in the engage phase, and choosing tasks that are challenging but realistic in promoting understanding.
