Unit 12 emphasizes the balance of fun and hard work necessary to a successful language lesson. Students are guided to learn accurate speaking skills through activities controlled by the teacher such as drilling and prompting. Just as important, though, are opportunities for students to speak the language freely, increasing fluency. The unit gives many helpful ideas for lessons which encourage development of both accuracy and fluency through games and exercises. Teaching and learning writing skills present unique challenges to teachers and students. Because of the difficulty, learning to write English may be avoided by learners, especially when their native language differs drastically in basic ways, such as the alphabetical system. Again, using interesting and clear lesson plans is necessary to overcome these challenges.
