Determining a learner's level is always a challenge, and one that must be addressed. In order to be serve each individual student's learning needs, as well of those in their class, it's important to make sure you as a teacher have a good idea of their abilities and their need for learning English. The needs are easier to ascertain, but the abilities are often harder to assess clearly. As a telephone and Internet trainer, my leveling lessons with learners were impossible to limit to just one time. Often the learners knew fixed phrases about their jobs, where they lived, and so on, and would have rehearsed those answers without being able to speak freely using similar vocabulary and grammar. In my previous job as a phone/Internet trainer, we taught grammar and function, but we leveled based on grammar, assigning a number to the learners' levels.
