This unit has dealt with managing a class in session. This includes how to use gestures to enhance understanding of particular ideas; using eye contact appropriately and where necessary; sitting arrangements that are optimal for student learning; using groupwork, pairwork and students working as individuals, effectively; teacher ensuring his or her own appropriate standing or sitting position during class; writing on the board at intervals and not letting it override time spent facing the students; establishing and maintaining positive teacher-student and student-student rapport; encouraging student talk time, keeping teacher talk time brief, plus maintaining equal student participation; maintaining discipline and addressing problem behaviour effectively (this should be done promptly and based on the code of conduct of the insitution). The way to use these techniques will depend on a variety of factors including class size, age group and space available.
