With conditional and reported speech its very important to get the conditionals correct as some of the problems you may face by confusing zero and first conditionals as well as third and mixed conditionals as a novice would struggle to distinguish between the variable, some of the teaching methods you might employ could be split sentences by taking multiple kinds of conditional sentences and cut them in half then mix them up having students put them back together or having them complete the conditional by only giving them half as well as other suggestions I have noted from the learning materials such as chain conditionals and role plays.
