Modals, phrasal verbs and passive voice Modals -The modals are: can, could, may might, shall, should, will, would must, have to, have got to, need to, needn't and ought to. They are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb. Passive voice Passive voice is most frequently used when it is not known, not important, or we don't want to say, exactly who performed an action Relative Causes defining - the information given in a defining relative clause is essential. it comes with no comma. (ex. My car I bought yesterday is broken = I have more than 1 car) non-defining - the information given in a defining relative clause is not essential. it comes with comma. (ex. My car, I bought yesterday, is broken. = I have 1 car) Phrasal Verbs Type1 - Intransitive: cannot be followed by a direct object Type2 - Transitive separable: pronoun can only come b/w the verb and the particle Type3 - Transitive inseparable: object or pronoun both come after the particle
