I absolutely can't imagine going into teaching a complex subject without a solid lesson plan. While it does have the tendency to create a \"rigid\" or almost inflexible lesson, I would say that proper lesson planning helps structure and organize an otherwise chaotic day in the classroom. As an elementary school teacher, I know that having a lesson plan with clear objectives on what the student should know by the end of the lesson is key to helping them achieve their learning goals. Like Unit 9 suggests, my lesson plans are somewhat formal in nature, planned weekly but simple and not \"scripted\". I also try to maintain similar structures throughout the week if we are learning the same lesson so students get a \"rhythm\" for how I teach and what they can expect to be taught. Timing is also important because it is very easy to ramble/go off on a tangent in class. Keeping lessons concise and to the point may be difficult but it's integral in teaching the lesson goals for that day.
