This unit covered solutions to common problems encountered in the classroom, such as what to do the first lesson or teaching students with different English levels. During a first lesson it is essential to build rapport between the teacher and students (and potentially, even between the students themselves), and to learn more about the students, their English goals, and their individual levels. This allows us to fit the needs of the classroom and build an environment that is comfortable and conducive to learning. Teaching students with varying English levels presents a significant hurdle. Luckily, there are a variety of ways to deal with this problem. The teacher can prepare different materials, or even, using the same materials, assign different tasks to their higher and lower leveled students. Another option is to pair the stronger students with the weaker students, giving both an opportunity for consistent involvement while simultaneously providing assistance to those students requiring it.
