Through the reading of the course material, I have discovered several mistakes that I have made in the past when teaching English. Two I have listed here. One, never give the lesson, or try to make a clarification, in the student's primary language. It reduces the incentive for the student to learn the language and to speak it. It can be very tempting to use the student's primary language if you can speak it, as there may be a drawn out period of silence in waiting for a student response. Rephrasing the question or reviewing the material is a better option. Two, I taught conversational English for a short time, and while conversing with the student is important, it is just as important for the teacher to recognize that the student needs additional vocabulary and lessons built into the conversational lessons so as to advance the student's language base. A need's analysis at the outset will help to define student weaknesses and the reason they are wanting to improve their English language skills.
