Phonetics and pronunciation are often the parts of English learning most neglected by teachers, even though it is often important to students. Teachers might feel unequipped to deal with these subjects, as they are often subconsciously employed by the native tongue. This unit went over some great ways to teach intonation, the natural rise and fall of the voice and its inflect; stress, the way we emphasize meaning by placing emphasis on the important syllables of the sentence, and pronunciation. Of special note with regard to pronunciation is the IPA, or International Phonetic Alphabet, which is a standardized notation of phonemic pronunciation. Teachers should be well acquainted with the IPA, and prepared to teach it to the students as well, because it provides a universal way of teaching students correct pronunciation. This is extra important for teaching English, since English is not a phonetic language and students, upon encountering a new word, often are unsure of its correct pronunciation.
