Though I have no plans on teaching a business English class, I found the section on it fascinating because someone who prepares pre-service teachers, I am teaching an audience who is learning for a distinct purpose, and some of them are inevitably students for whom English is a second language. This unit made me think about how to construct lessons that not only emphasize the content but also the language skills necessary to succeed in their chosen profession. I was of course also interested in the section on teaching young children (after this course, I will be taking the additional course on teaching children), and I found much of the recommendations aligned with what I would choose to emphasize with my pre-service teachers. It was a good reminder, however, that though it may be a teacher's instinct to slip into their students' mother tongue, if the classroom is not a bilingual one, staying with English and supporting learning through gestures and visuals will help them acquire the language faster.
