Outside of building relationships with students, I would argue that the most important thing a teacher can do is be a good lesson planner. The lesson provides the group with an aim (in contemporary pedagogical parlance, an objective) and a context for that aim. It is what gives the student a reason for being in that class. I would argue that really good lesson plans have story arcs, and I think the ESA model fits that perfectly. Sometimes the stories/lessons need to be kept simple, with the goal of the protagonist/students being straight forward--this would be a straight arrow lesson. Sometimes, however, the story arc must be more complicated, and in a classroom this will play out as a patchwork lesson, sometimes spread across multiple days. What I especially appreciate about this unit is the layout of the lesson plan--it is nearly identical to those developed by the local teaching schools for use with their pre-service educators. It is as if your curriculum designers are well-versed in contemporary pedagogy!
