Unit 11 explores the importance of receptive skills (reading and listening), and also covers various activities and techniques that can help students learn these skills in a more stimulating and effective manner. Receptive skills may be used to achieve a specific purpose or simply for entertainment. The language used may present problems for language learners, but these can be minimised by pre-teaching vocabulary, carefully selecting texts, and providing comprehension tasks that boost understanding. I learnt that there are generally five specialist skills needed for reading and listening successfully, whereas I had also been aware of three. I also learnt that a teacher should consider using a variety of topics for texts and dialogues over a period of time to appeal to all the students. This can be achieved by getting to know the students and their interests. The task sheet gave me practice in creating two ESA lesson plans with the objective of helping students practise their reading skills and learn new grammar.
