Unit 14, Coursebooks and lesson materials, examines the issue of whether or not to use a course book, and if so, which one. This unit also provides detailed information on which type of materials (Authentic, created), other than the course book, to use in class. Authentic materials (Magazines, books, poems ...) must be selected carefully since they are not designed for the EFL student. Created materials (Crosswords, picture stories, gap fill activities ...)are often designed by the teacher to replace or supplement materials from a course book. Unit 14 also provides a lot of useful information on how to choose a course book and make the best use of it. I learned to consider the importance of using a variety of created materials in class to motivate students and help them to gain confidence. Studying this unit will help me to make good use of course books by not considering them as a solution to everything and not using them for the whole lesson. I also learned to carefully analyze a course book before choosing one.
