This unit covers the topic of course development. Before the start of a course, students should be given a level test to determine their level of ability. A needs analysis should also be carried out to find out the students' previous learning experiences, what they need English for in their job, as well as what they feel would be the most beneficial areas for them to study. From the results of the level test and the needs analysis, a preliminary syllabus can be designed. The first lesson should be spent to do a needs negotiation with the students and the focus would be in areas students feel would be the most useful to them as a group, then the syllabus should be explained to the students. Knowing the length of the course, we can then determine how much time should be spent on each topic. A progress/achievement test should be carried out in the last lesson. Also a course evaluation should be carried out in the form of a questionnaire, where the students can give feedback and suggestions on how to improve the course.
