Conditionals refer to sentences that contain ?íf? or ?when?. The two clauses can be thought of as the ?if? clause and the main clause, and either one can appear as the first part of a conditional sentence. One must be satisfied (i.e. the condition) for a consequence to happen. There are five main conditionals ? zero, first, second, third and mixed. It is common for problems to arise as students get mixed up between the complex structures of tense, however there are a number of useful teaching ideas such as using split sentences, taking turns forming chain conditionals, and completing conditional sentences using the students? own ideas. Teaching the use and application of direct and reported speech can also be challenging as the differences between the two depend on several factors such as verb tenses, time expressions, pronouns and backshifting, questions, etc. As always, it is important to guide the students patiently and thoroughly and giving them plenty of examples and opportunities to practice.
