This unit lays emphasis on the teaching of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and language functions as well as the techniques and strategies used for teaching them during the Engage, Study, and Activate phases. For all three of the subjects the reading concisely explained students need to know about them and then various methods as to how to go about teaching these necessities. If, for instance, a teacher is teaching vocabulary, he or she must ensure that the students understand the meaning, how and when to use it, its grammatical function and positioning, , its interaction, spelling, and pronunciation. In order to do so he or she can choose to engage the students with realia, mime and action, pictures, contrast, discussion, and/or discovery. From there the teacher can use gap-fill exercises, word searches, crosswords, matching exercises, example sentences, and pronunciation exercises in the study stage of the lesson. Finally, in the activate stage they can use communicative games, role play, story building, and discussion/debate exercises.
