Parts of speech has been a great grammar review. We touched on the fundamental word order when using our parts of speech: noun, pronoun, verb, adverb, adjective, conjunction, and preposition. We made a distinction between proper, common, countable nouns (concrete), uncountable nouns (abstract) and collective nouns. We also reviewed definite and indefinite articles and their uses. Ex. A pen...the pen. In addition, we reviewed adjectives, and how they are used in the correct order within a sentence. (i.e the old red book) and the use of adverbs (He is moving very slowly towards the door). Moreover, we reviewed verb tenses, and how to distinguish between a transitive and an intransitive verbs. Transitive verbs are followed by an object (Mary goes to the movies weekly), and intransitive, denoting an action and not followed by an object (Peter works hard at work.) In summary, it has been a great review which helps explain students more thoroughly the importance of the parts of speech used in English grammar to learning sentence structure properly.
