This unit covered conditionals and reported speech. This is a very technical and tricky part of English which will be very difficult for students to understand initially, as there are many rules. It will take time for them to develop an ear for it. The diagrams provided will be useful in teaching the material. There are five types of conditionals. Some ideas for teaching conditionals include using split sentences, completing the conditional (a fill in the blank sentence), chain conditionals, giving students moral dilemmas, and role plays. A lot of adjustments need to be made when converting direct speech into reported speech. There is a table showing how tenses are changed. There is a useful diagram showing how to convert time expressions from direct to reported speech, such as changing ?tomorrow? to ?the next day,? as ?tomorrow? would create confusion in reported speech. Methods for teaching reported speech include role playing an intermediary, media interviews, and for higher levels, ?reporting? verbs.
