This unit looks at the different theories, methods, and techniques used to teach English. And effective method that incorporates learning and using language is ESA- Engage, Study, and Activate. The Engage stage is about getting the students involved and interested in the topic. These activities can include games, music, stories and should focus less on strict teaching and more on getting the student's attention. The next step is Study, where students focus on the language and how it is constructed. The instructor should elicit as much content as possible from the students and then check to make sure the understanding is correct. The Activate stage encourages students to use the language skills they've learned and other language skills they already know. Students should be encouraged to freely communicate these skills. These three steps can be implemented in ESA order through the Straight Arrow ESA technique, or mix the steps by using the Boomerang or Patchwork techniques. This unit also describes different activity ideas for each of these stages.
