Phonology is the study of the sounds of a language. This unit explains how the sounds are pronounced in the English language. Intonation is the part of phonology that explains how the voice changes in volume and pitch within a sentence. Differences in intonation show different emotions and if a phrase is a statement or question. Stress points the 'strongest' word in a sentence. Altering the stressed word in a phrase also change the meaning of the sentence. Every word has a stressed syllable that usually doesn't change, and this makes the memorization of stressed syllables easy. The International Phonetic Alphabet presents symbols that indicate how each sound in the English language should be pronounced. Most of the English dictionaries show the pronunciation of the words using this system; this helps non-native speakers know how a word is pronounced, even if they have never heard the word being pronounced. After this, the unit presents the groups of letters according to the place of pronunciation in the mouth and according to articulation kind.
