This unit covers the different types of lesson materials and course books that may be used to teach in the classroom. I learned that materials can fall into two different groups: authentic or created materials. Anything that a native English speaker may hear or read in every-day life may be considered \"authentic\". Alternatively, \"created\" materials are materials that are designed by the teacher to supplement materials taught from the published course books. Some examples of created materials that are given include crossword puzzles, role-play cards, and flashcards, to name a few. I learned that course books usually include a set of materials. This set could include materials for the student, such as a workbook or a classroom book, and also materials for the teacher as well. There are many benefits or advantages of having course books, as well as some disadvantages. Factors to consider when trying to decide on a particular course book to use may include price, design, and whether or not it includes a teacher's guide, among other things.
